In most movies and television series, strippers have either been accessories or very minor characters. Despite the shady world that they live in, there is hardly any production that tackles their stories which do provide enough firepower. Starz’s ‘P-Valley’ recognizes this gap and takes full advantage of it, presenting a story about strippers with its characteristic high production value and mature themes. The show has received some extremely favorable reviews, with many critics even calling it the best new TV show of 2020. Hence, if you haven’t seen it yet, now might be a good time.
‘P-Valley’ revolves around a few strip club dancers working for a non-binary individual’s strip club in Mississippi. The main characters are depicted to be females who use their profession as a means to earn money which would in turn, give them their freedom. The character of Mercedes, for example, is saving up to open her own gym for high-school dancers. The show depicts the freedom of being able to express oneself through cosmetics especially through the character of the non-binary strip club owner, Uncle Clifford.
The character of Mercedes is essayed by Brandee Evans. She has been seen in productions such as ‘Dear Santa, I Need a Date,’ and ‘The Bobby Brown Story.’ The character of Uncle Clifford, on the other hand, is essayed by Nicco Annan who has starred in shows such as ‘Shameless,’ and ‘This is Us.’
P-Valley Filming Locations
