Box Office: ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ Tops with $847M, ‘Lion King’ Debuts in China

Sony and Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ took home another $100M this weekend, while the international box earning inches close to $850M mark. The 23rd entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe grossed $572.5M from the overseas market while surpassing the benchmark set by 2007 movie ‘Spider-Man 3,’ ($555M), to become the highest-grossing Spidey flick ever at the foreign box office. According to the latest reports, the movie earned $847M globally within 18 days in theaters.

Meanwhile, Disney’s long-awaited live-action reboot ‘The Lion King’ debuted in China with an impressive $54.7M opening haul. The movie also went on to become the King of Disney’s “reimagine old classics” bandwagon while overtaking previous flicks like ‘The Jungle Book,’ ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘Aladdin.’ The head start is expected to add fuel to the movie’s home run when it hits theaters this week in the U.S.

Another Disney franchise vehicle from Pixar, ‘Toy Story 4’ captures second place this week by nearing $350M domestic gross. The fourth installment of ‘Toy Story’ franchise earned $20.3M in its fourth weekend. The total overall box office figures of the movie stand at $346M.

While the tent-poles fly higher as per expectations, the newcomers are struggling to catch up with. Paramount’s alligator thriller ‘Crawl’ leads the race among new releases with a $12M opening haul. Increasing word of mouth along with an 89% Rotten Tomatoes score and a B on CinemaScore, are in favor of the movie which grossed $1.4M at the Middle East box office followed by a $1M from Malaysia and $832,000 from Indonesia.

While ‘Crawl’ shows signs of a resurgence this week, ‘Stuber,’ which landed at Disney after the Fox-Disney Merger, is lagging behind with an estimated $8M opening haul from 3,050 screens. The Kumail Nanjiani and Dave Bautista buddy comedy met with a 47% Rotten Tomatoes score and a B on CinemaScore.

Danny Boyle’s Beatles-inspired musical ‘Yesterday‘ earned another $7.8M this weekend, bringing it overall gross to $80.5M. A24’s ‘The Farewell’ emerged as the surprise opener this weeked by setting the highest per-screen average of 2019. The indie flick holds a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score with an estimated $351,330 weekend gross. On the other hand, Disney’s ‘Aladdin’ still lingers around the charts with a $5.9M haul in its eighth weekend, bringing its overall gross to $960M.

Further down the chart, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is just $7M short of breaking the mammoth record set by ‘Avatar.’ The Marvel Cinematic Universe epic has touched $850M by its 12th weekend at the domestic box office, bringing the overall gross to a massive $2.78B. The release of ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home‘ boosted the 22nd entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to challenge ‘Avatar’s’ all-time box office record of $2.788B.
