At the beginning of this year, the psychological horror movie, ‘Escape Room’ surprised many people by raking in $155 million at the box office against a lean budget of $9 million. While the movie was criticized for its relatively unoriginal plot; its tense atmosphere, premise and cast were praised.
Originally titled ‘The Maze,’ the movie is based on the popular activity of escape room puzzles where players have to figure out a way to leave a locked room using the help of clues. The movie had an open ending, allowing for the possibility of a sequel which started being developed soon after its release. Continue reading to find out more details about the sequel.
Escape Room 2 Plot: What is it about?
One can expect ‘Escape Room’ sequel to follow the same format as the first movie given the fact that it’s a psychological thriller with a pretty tight premise. One can speculate the plot of the second movie based on most horror sequels where the lore/ghost/killer stays the same, while newer victims are introduced.
Plus, ‘Escape Room’ also gave a rather strong indication of the premise of the sequel. The first movie follows six characters: a rich day-trader, a lover of escape room puzzles, a war veteran, a student, a stock boy and a truck driver. Each of them are given a puzzle cube to solve. When they manage to solve it, they are invited to participate in an escape room puzzle with a prize of $1 million upon completion. However, when they reach the location, they realize that they have to escape the room using their wits otherwise lose their lives since the room is a giant, gradually heating oven.
The movie ends with two characters, Ben and Zoey surviving the escape room and planning on investigating a building related to the people responsible behind the escape room that made them fight for their lives. However, the building that they go is teased to be another game of survival.
Escape Room 2 Cast: Who is in it?
Taylor Russell and Logan Miller return to the sequel of ‘Escape Room’ after their characters managed to survive the first escape room and were shown entering another without their knowledge at the end of the movie.
Taylor Russell plays Zoey Davis, a physics student. Russell is a Canadian actress who plays the character of Judy Robinson in the Netflix show, ‘Lost in Space.’ Moreover, she also acted in drama movie, ‘Waves’ alongside Sterling K. Brown. Her performance in the movie was praised by critics and has earned her the Virtuoso award which she will receive at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in 2020.
Logan Miller, on the other hand is an American actor who starred in the Disney’s ‘I’m in the Band.’ Moreover, he played a younger Matthew McConaughey in ‘Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.’ Miller will reprise his role as Ben for the sequel to ‘Escape Room.’
The American actress, Isabelle Fuhrman is also part of movie’s cast alongside Holland Roden, Indya Moore, Thomas Cocquerel and Carlito Olivero. Fuhrman is known for playing Clove in ‘The Hunger Games.’ Moreover, she also plays Esther in the horror movie, ‘Orphan.’
Furthermore, the ‘Teen Wolf’ actress, Holland Roden will also been seen in ‘Escape Room 2.’ Other than playing Lydia Martin on the teen drama, she also plays Zoe Woods in the anthology series, ‘Channel Zero: Butcher’s Block.’
Other than Roden and Fuhrman, Indya Moore is another prominent artist who is part of ‘Escape Room 2.’ Named as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine this year, Moore gained prominence for playing Angel Evangelista in the TV show, ‘Pose.’ They are a member of the transgender community and identifies themself as non-binary, preferring to use the pronouns they/them to refer to themself.
Carlito Olivero, an American singer and actor, is part of movie’s cast. He most notably finished third in season 3 of the reality show, ‘The X Factor.’
Escape Room 2 Crew: Who is Behind it?
‘Escape Room 2’ has retained most of the crew from ‘Escape Room.’
Adam Robitel is directing the sequel to ‘Escape Room’ as well. He is best known for helming multiple horror movies like ‘Insidious: The Last Key’ and ‘The Taking of Deborah Logan.’ Moreover, he also served as a co-writer for the movie, ‘Paranormal Activity: The Last Dimension.’
Moreover, Bragi F. Schut and Maria Melnik is the movie’s screenwriter. Other writers involved in the project include Fritz Bohm, Will Honley, Christine Lavaf and Daniel Tuch.
Furthermore, Steven Mirkovich returns as the editor while Marc Spicer handles the cinematography for the second part as well. Sony Pictures Releasing would be distributing the movie.
Escape Room 2 Release Date:
‘Escape Room 2’ will be release on August 14, 2020. Sony Pictures initially intended to release the movie on April 17, 2020 but it had to pushed back for unknown reasons. However, ‘Escape Room 2’ will be facing some stiff competition from multiple movies such as ‘The One and Only Ivan’ starring Angelina Jolie, ‘Nobody’ starring Bob Odenkirk and the biography ‘Respect’ based on Aretha Franklin’s life, all of which are scheduled for an August 14th 2020 release. Well, the only thing that is certain is the fact that the performance of ‘Escape Room’ will dictate the future of the franchise.
