“Below Her Mouth” is a bold drama that begins with a passionate weekend affair between two women. Dallas and Jasmine immediately share a powerful connection that ends up changing their lives forever. When his best friends make this discovery, his life falls apart. Based on true events, this emotional movie has an incredible performance by Hilary Swank that even granted her an Academy Award for “Best Actress.” Despite the difficult subject, Kimberly Pierce manages to make a simple and honest movie. It not only tells a story about courage and lesbianism but also about obsession, pride, and prejudice. A must-watch for all cinema lovers.

9. Laurence Anyways (2012)
In this movie, we follow ten years in the life of a literature teacher named Laurence, who transitions into a woman. This makes her relationship with her family and significant other, Frédérique, even more complicated and tremulous. Though others may not initially accept Laurence in her true form, those who knew her before still know her as Laurence, anyways. Xavier Dolan wrote an emotional drama where every scene is a work of art. The combination of brilliant acting, powerful music, and mesmerizing cinematography make it completely breathtaking. “Laurence Anyways” is capable of evoking such empathy as it handles familiar feelings, thereby making it impossible not to love it. Besides that, it features fascinating performances, especially by Melvin Poupaud.

8. With Every Heartbeat (2011)

This drama does not romanticize love but highlights good and painful parts of it without holding back. It is an instant classic in movies with a lesbian theme.

The tumultuous political landscape of Paris in 1968 serves as the backdrop for a tale about three young cineastes who are drawn together through their passion for film. Matthew, a conservative American exchange student, becomes friends with a French brother and sister, developing an unusual relationship. “The Dreamers” is a daring and energetic film, a confession of a great filmmaker: Bernardo Bertolucci. It is a film about being different from those around you. That’s why it is going to surprise you and conquer your heart if you loved “Blue is the Warmest Color.”

5. But I’m a Cheerleader (1999)
Megan is an American girl that has a boyfriend. However, due to some of her actions, her parents and friends conclude that she must be gay and send her off to a “sexual redirection” school. Although this film has some flaws (for example, it is too fast-paced in some scenes), “But I’m a Cheerleader” is a great movie for anyone in the closet or anyone just looking for a feel-good movie.

Directed and written by John Sayles, “Lianna” tells the story of a happily married woman who realizes she is a repressed lesbian after she has an affair with a female college professor. We follow her as she tries to come to terms with her newfound lifestyle. Sayles is a remarkable writer of human interrelationships. That and the amazing performance of Linda Griffith makes “Lianna” an amazing and original film about trying to be who you really are. A film ahead of its time.

3. Happy Together (1997)
“Happy Together” is a tragic love story written and directed by the amazing Kar-Wai Wong. Yiu-Fai and Po-Wing arrive in Argentina from Hong Kong. However, something is wrong, and their relationship goes adrift. Their complicated relationship makes them drift apart in opposite directions. The combination of fine performances by all the cast, stunning locations, beautiful cinematography, and great atmosphere make this drama a poetic and moving film. “Happy Together” intelligently explores the concepts of love, which makes it easy to identify with, regardless of one’s gender or sexuality.

2. Weekend (2011)
After a drunken house party, Russell (Tom Cullen) heads out to a gay club. Just before closing time, he picks up Glen (Chris New) but what’s expected to be just a one-night stand becomes something more. “Weekend” follows a story about two people falling in love, without forced cuteness or cheap emotional manipulation. Nothing feels forced since there is a naturalness about the dialogue and a sense of lightness in the filmmaking. Additionally, the acting is wonderful. Written and directed by Andrew Haigh, this drama is extremely moving and important (just like “Blue is the Warmest Color”).

Directed by Todd Haynes, “Carol” is about two lesbian women in the 1950s, as well as their beautiful and poignant love story. Therese, a young girl and aspiring photographer, falls for an older married woman in New York. Mara’s performance is subtle but powerful, granting her a second Oscar nomination. One of the most impressive things about it is how she manages to show us so much by doing so little. Using only her body language, Mara can show us a range of emotions. The chemistry between her and Cate Blanchett is extraordinary, making the scenes that they share together heartbreaking.
