Netflix has released the first trailers for ‘Marriage Story’, an upcoming comedy-drama movie written and directed by Noah Baumbach. The film tells the story of a stage director and his actor wife who go through a tough divorce that pushes them both to their personal and creative extremes.
Noah Baumbach has made the unconventional decision to release dual trailers for the movie. One of the trailers tells the story from Nicole’s perspective. The character is played by Scarlett Johansson. Nicole recounts all that she loves about Charlie. She says “He loves being a dad, almost annoying how much he loves it. He cries easily at movies. He’s very clear about what he wants.” The second clip is what Charlie loves about Nicole. Adam Driver plays the part. Charlie says, “She’s a great dancer, infectious. She a mother who plays, really plays. She knows when to push me and when to leave me alone.” It is clear that they are both competitive and despite some flaws, they are largely accepting and supportive of each other. Both the trailers are wonderfully scored to Otis Redding’s ‘I’ve Been Loving You Too Long’. They depict sweet scenes of a blissful married life before leading up to a shared dour note of a divorce. Nicole and Charlie also attempt to sit down and have a tough conversation with each other but find themselves out of words. Charlie even goes on to say he does not know how to start when Nicole tells him that they should talk.
The movie also stars Laura Dern, Alan Alda, and Ray Liotta, who are bound to play supporting characters in the lives of Charlie and Nicole. Baumbach commented on the trailers saying, ” ‘Marriage Story’ is a love story that reveals itself within the breakdown. With these companion trailers, I wanted to show the relationship through the eyes of both characters. There are many sides to every story, and the movie embraces these different viewpoints in order to find the shared truth.”
Adam Driver recently appeared in Jim Jarmusch’s star-studded zombie movie titled ‘The Dead Don’t Die’. He will soon be seen reprising his role as Kylo Ren in ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’. Scarlett Johansson was last seen playing the role of Black Widow in ‘Avengers: Endgame’. She will most notably reprise the part in her standalone ‘Black Widow‘ movie. Noah Baumbach is best known for helming films like ‘The Squid and the Whale‘, ‘Frances Ha‘, ‘The Meyerowitz Stories’ and will be working on the screenplay of ‘Barbie’ after ‘Marriage Story’.
Netflix is aiming for a fall release. However, before that, ‘Marriage Story’ is slated to premiere on August 29, at the Venice Film Festival. After that, there will be screenings at Telluride, TIFF and the New York Film Festival. You can check out the trailers for ‘Marriage Story’ below.
