Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ enters its third week as Box office topper despite the strong competition from Legendary’s ‘Pokémon Detective Pikachu.’ With the help of a $7.516M haul on Thursday, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has earned $660.4M in 14 days from North American market. The movie replaced James Cameron’s ‘Titanic’ to become the fifth-biggest domestic grosser of all time. According to estimates, it will pass ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ which stands with a $679M, and ‘Black Panther with a $700M, by Saturday. The estimated third-weekend collection of ‘Endgame’ is around $62M. It is still expected to cross $700M mark on Saturday to break the 16-day collection record of ‘Star Wars Force Awakens.’
‘Endgame’ grossed over $2.3B worldwide so far. The movie has recently passed ‘Titanic‘ to become the No. 2 film of all time in the global box office, second only to ‘Avatar,’ which holds the top spot with a massive $2.78B.
‘Pokémon Detective Pikachu’ earned $20.7M on Friday night including previews. ‘Endgame’ ended up behind with a $16.2M. Being the first major contender to ‘Endgame,’ Warner Bros. and Legendary’s ‘Pikachu’ heads for a $55M from 4,202 locations in the first weekend. Ryan Reynolds leads the voice cast of ‘Pikachu’ with Justice Smith voicing Tim Goodman, a young man whose father goes missing under mysterious circumstances. When the cheeky yellow detective learns that it can communicate with Tim, both join forces to find his missing father. The movie has earned a 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and A- CinemaScore.
Other new releases are also there in the box office but lagging behind ‘Endgame’ and ‘Pikachu’ by huge margins. United Artists flick ‘The Hustle,’ starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson, has grossed around $13M from 3,007 locations, including $3.9M from Friday to catch the third spot. Directed by Chris Addison from a script by Stanley Shapiro, Paul Henning, Dale Launer, and Jac Schaeffer, the comedy features Hathaway and Wilson as two con women in action.
STX Films and eOne movie ‘Poms,’ which has Jacki Weaver and Diane Keaton in the lead roles, is expected to collect around $7M to $10M from 2,750 locations. The movie features a group of elder women in a retirement community who form a cheerleading squad challenging conventions. ‘Poms’ earned $1.5M on Friday and has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 28%. The movie is in a neck-to-neck battle with Lionsgate’s ‘Long Shot‘ and Sony’s ‘The Intruder,’ both enter the second weekend, for No. 4. ‘Long Shot,’ starring Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen, has collected $16.8M so far while ‘The Intruder’ has amassed around $14M.
Dome Karukoski’s ‘Tolkien,’ is estimated to gross a $2M after opening at 1,495 locations, reports Variety. The other new releases are IFC’s ‘Charlie Says,’ Kenneth Branagh’s ‘All Is True’ and the documentary ‘Biggest Little Farm.’
