The first trailer for the long-awaited ‘Ford v. Ferrari‘ has finally arrived. The trailer debuted during Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday. Directed by James Mangold, who is known for movies like ‘Logan‘ and ‘Walk the Line,’ the movie is “based on the incredible true story” of building an entirely new race car from nothing. The plot follows a determined team of American engineers and designers led by automotive visionary Carroll Shelby (played by Matt Damon) and his British driver, Ken Miles (played by Christian Bale). They are dispatched by Henry Ford II (played by Tracy Letts) with the prestigious mission of making a new beast to beat the legendary Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans World Championship.
The trailer opens up with Miles (Bale) reflecting on racing along with his son on a race track.
“Out there,” Miles says, “is the perfect lap. You see it?”
His son says he thinks he can.
Miles replies, “Most people can’t.”
Then, Henry Ford II (Letts) is seen seeks help to Shelby (Damon) to build the fastest car in the history of racing.
“It ain’t about speed,” Shelby says. “You need a pure racer behind the wheel of your car. That’s Ken Miles.”
Shelby soon turns up at Miles’ doorsteps to persuade the stubborn driver to take on the dream project. The trailer offers a sneak peek into the background stories of the cut-throat areas like automotive design, engineering and racing. It also gives the viewers a feat of the nostalgic paraphernalia from the ’60s including characteristic cars, Shelby’s hipster accessories like sunglasses and retro music and Damon and Bale’s onscreen bromance delivered in true vintage style. The trailer also features some high-octane car racing and crash sequences from the track.
Jon Bernthal, Caitriona Balfe, Josh Lucas, Noah Jupe, Remo Girone, and Ray McKinnon also play important roles in ‘Ford v. Ferrari.’ The long-gestating movie was initially slated for release this summer by Fox. But Walt Disney Studios pushed the release dates back after its acquisition of Fox last year. ‘Ford v. Ferrari’ is expected to be one of the major Oscar contenders for the upcoming award season.
‘Ford v. Ferrari’ is the first feature of director Mangold after the 2017 Wolverine flick ‘Logan.’ The movie which features Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart in the lead went on to become a huge critical and commercial success.
Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, Jason Keller and Mangold wrote the script for ‘Ford v. Ferrari.’ Chernin Entertainment, which is known for the Jennifer Lawrence spy thriller ‘Red Sparrow,’ produces the movie. ‘Ford v. Ferrari’ hits theaters on November 15, 2019.
