There are movies for every mood, and Christmas happens to be the most popular one at that. The festive season lights up the world around you, and there is really no such other time of the year. What makes it better is a good Christmas movie that you can enjoy with your family. Over the years, many films have been released to serve this purpose, but only a few have managed to leave their mark. ‘Home Alone‘ is one of them. The blockbuster skyrocketed the career of Macaulay Culkin and turned him into a household name. It is one of the favourite Christmas movies of people all over the world, and to see it once again on the screen is what the fans want.
After its acquisition of 20th Century Fox, Disney has been digging into the library to seek out the films that have a potential for revival. ‘Home Alone’ is one of the firsts to receive this treatment, and ever since Disney announced the reboot, people have been speculating about the plot and cast of the film. If you are one such fan, then it is time to put your curiosity to rest. For you, we have put together all the exciting details about the film in one place. Let’s see what the reboot of ‘Home Alone’ looks like.
Home Alone Plot: What Can it Be About?
Chris Columbus’ 1990 film, ‘Home Alone’ follows the story of a kid named Kevin. When his family flies off to Paris, leaving him behind, all alone at the house that is decorated for Christmas, he finds a way to keep himself occupied. Two robbers, who had been keeping an eye on the house, don’t expect Kevin to be home and try to break-and-enter. Kevin, an already mischievous boy, finds different ways to stop the men while protecting himself from them.
In 1992, the film received a sequel, ‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York’. It picks up the events one year after the original. This time, while the family flies off to Florida, Kevin boards the wrong plane and ends up in New York City. While making do with his father’s credit card, he comes to know that the robbers from the previous film are in the same city. They have escaped and, once again, Kevin must find a way to counter them.
In 1997, the film received another sequel, but with a different cast and characters. In 2002, a fourth film, ‘Home Alone 4: Taking Back the House’ was made for television. The follow-ups could not recreate the magic of the first two films, especially due to the lack of a charismatic lead as Culkin and the uninspired scripts. With the reboot, this is supposed to change.
Though the film works on a similar premise- a kid chased by two adults, the reboot reinvents the story of the original. The central character is a kid named Max. We don’t know much about his background yet, but we do know that he steals a precious heirloom. This leads a couple to chase after him, as they want the heirloom to save themselves from the financial doom, at the brink of which they stand. As more details about the plot come out, we will update this section.
Home Alone Cast and Crew: Who Can Be Behind It?
The main character in the original ‘Home Alone’ is Kevin McCallister, a boy left behind while the rest of his family leaves for Paris to spend Christmas. It is played by Macaulay Culkin. Because the essence of the story revolves around him, it was very important to get the right person for the lead role. Archie Yates, who made his on-screen debut with Taika Waititi’s war-satire, ‘Jojo Rabbit‘, is set to be the star of the ‘Home Alone’ reboot.
Two more well-known names in comedy have been pegged for main roles. Ellie Kemper, who is known for her roles in ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt‘ and ‘The Office‘ has been brought on board. However, she will not be playing the role of the kid’s mother. In fact, she is to be one of the people who are after the kid, and hence, becomes the object of his torment. Rob Delaney has been pegged alongside Yates and Kemper to complete the trio. He is known for working in films like ‘Catastrophe’, ‘Deadpool 2‘, ‘The Hustle‘ and ‘Bombshell‘.
The stars of the original film- Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern and Catherine O’Hara- would most likely not be a part of the reboot. However, the filmmakers might find a way to add them to the equation, even if for the sake of callbacks and Easter Eggs.
The director’s hat for ‘Home Alone’ is donned by Dan Mazer. The British comedian and filmmaker is known for working on films like ‘Dirty Grandpa’ and ‘Bridget Jones’ Baby‘. He has also been a frequent collaborator of Sacha Baron Cohen and has made ‘Ali G Indahouse’, ‘Borat’ and ‘The Dictator‘ with him.
The script is written by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell, both of whom have honed their skills while working for ‘Saturday Night Live’. Hutch Parker and Dan Wilson are producing the film, with Disney+ set to launch it through its streaming service.

Home Alone Release Date: When Will It Premiere?
‘Home Alone’ reboot begins production in 2020, most likely around February and March. A release date hasn’t been fixed yet, however, if Disney+ decides to continue on the trend of the previous releases in the franchise, we can expect the reboot to release sometime in October or November of 2020.
