Directed by Ryan Murphy, who is known for creating several successful television shows, ‘The Prom’ is a musical comedy film that follows four Broadway actors who help a teenage girl getting into the prom with her girlfriend. It is based on the musical of the same name by Chad Beguelin, Matthew Sklar and Bob Martin. Beguelin and Martin wrote the screenplay of the film and also served as producers. This 2012 musical film also has a heavy dose of comedy. Directed by Jason Moore and loosely based on Mickey Rapkin’s non-fiction book of the same name, ‘Pitch Perfect’ is exactly what the title says. It showcases the ups and downs in Barden University’s all-girl acappella group’s journey to win The International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella. Filled with excellent performances by Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, and Skylar Astin, among others, this light-hearted musical met with a positive critical response and proved to be a commercial success. 3. Mamma Mia! (2008)
This jukebox musical film is a delight for fans of the Swedish pop group ABBA. Based on the 1999 musical of the same name, the film stars Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, Pierce Brosnan, and Dominic Cooper, among others who sing the song themselves. The movie a young bride-to-be who embarks on a mission to find the perfect suitor for her mother by inviting three suitable men to her forthcoming wedding. Based on the life of British musician Elton John, this film has all the ingredients for a delightful musical. Amazing soundtrack, impressive set-pieces, as well as dramatic moments, performed brilliantly by the actors, including Taron Egerton, who graciously portrays John in the film. It also has a strong supporting cast comprising Jamie Bell, Bryce Dallas Howard and Richard Madden. It’s truly a treat for fans of the musical and John’s music.

Bradley Cooper, shines like a star in his directorial debut. A remake of the ‘A Star Is Born’ musical, the film also has Lady Gaga who acts and sings beautifully and effortlessly. It tells the story of an alcoholic musician who falls in love with a singer. The film has several live performance scenes that are complemented by the beautiful soundtrack. Owing to its story and emotional gravity, ‘A Star Is Born’ also works for those who are not into musicals.
