15 Best Movies of 2010

2010 was a great year for cinema. While we noticed a biopic on the man behind Facebook, we also came across breath-taking suspense in movies like Shutter Island. The third installment of Toy Story came out the same year, along with more animated feature films that caught people’s eyes and made them think again about animations. 2010 may well be called the cornerstone of the 21st-century cinematic universe. Here is the list of top movies of 2010.

15. Unstoppable (2010)

Full of adrenaline-pumping scenes, this film starring Denzel Washington is an adventurous flick loosely based on the CSX 8888 incident about a runaway freight train that needs to be stopped somehow to avert any casualties. Washington and Pine attempt to do that. This action movie garnered positive reviews and made its name as one of the best action movies to come out in that decade. The movie hit the spot with its thrill and edge-of-the-seat stuff.

14. The Town (2010)

Directed by Ben Affleck, this movie is about a bank heist. A gang of thieves decides to rob a bank. While they’re at it, they take the Bank Manager as a hostage. The story unravels when one of them falls in love with the hostage. The movie has some good action sequences and strikes the right balance between action and drama. The characterization and directing is very well done, making The Town an enjoyable flick.

13. True Grit (2010)

This Coen Brother’s thriller is about a young girl who joins hands with an aging US Marshal, played by Jeff Bridges, to track the men who murdered his father. The visual scenes and background score allow one to immerse in this straightforward revenge genre film.  The good-old fashion and good comic delivery of scenes make this movie a delight to watch. True Grit is deeply moving and one of the best movies of 2010.

12. Incendies (2010)

Directed by the legendary Denis Villeneuve, Incendies follows the story of two twins who make a revealing discovery about the death of their mother and find out their father is pretty much alive. So, they go out in an attempt to unravel the secrets of their family in the Middle East. The story unfolds brilliantly with some commendable performances by the actors. There are moments that keep the viewers’ attention on the leash, all the while making the ending unsusceptible.

11. The Fighter (2010)

Starring Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg, this is the story of a boxer who takes the help of his older brother, Dicky Eklund, to make a career in boxing. The story is set in the mid-1980s about two brothers trying to create history inside the boxing ring. This film is based on the true story of Micky “Irish” Ward whose career in the ring was shepherded by his brother. The movie is engaging and, at the same time, motivating. It is one of those films where the excitement really gets to you. A fun watch with the boys.

10. Kick-Ass (2010)

Based on the comic book of the same name, this superhero comedy depicts the story of an American teenager, Dave, who sets out to become a real-life and goes by the name Kick-Ass but later comes face-to-face with Big Daddy, played by Nicholas Cage, in a quest to bring down the crime boss. Kick-Ass and Big Daddy’s daughter, Hit-Girl save the neighborhood in a very comical way from the crime boss. The movie is a very fun ride down the Gangster hood with just the right amount of jokes. A fun Sunday watch.

9. Easy A (2010)

Arguably the most underrated movie on this list, this movie, starring Emma Stone, is a fun-to-watch story of a regular girl in a regular high school, but things start getting very messy when she reveals that she isn’t a virgin. This spreads in the school like wildfire, which in turn makes her popular but at the same time creates a lot of problems to take care of.  This movie transcends the regular high-school drama movies with a fresh script that will keep you interested for the whole time, wanting for more. An Easy A.

8. How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

This animated feature was critically acclaimed, with voices by Gerard Butler and Jonah Hill. It’s the story of a Viking chief’s son who must capture a dragon in order to attain adulthood and prove his position in the tribe. The dragon that he meets is called Toothless, and in his journey to win the dragon’s trust, they really connect with each other. Everything from the animated shots from the sky atop Toothless back to the message that the film tries to convey feels quite real. It is an engaging and entertaining watch for kids and adults alike.

7. Despicable Me (2010)

Despicable Me introduced the new characters Minions, which instantly became a favorite of everyone. It is the story of Gru, an evil mastermind who adopts three girls from the orphanage in order to complete the greatest heist in history. As it turns out, he is not quite as evil as he thinks himself to be, and the little girls make him realize that as they find a father figure in him. The movie is entertaining at every moment, makes you smile and giggle at times, and you’ll sure go “Aww!” over the cuteness of the Minions.

6. Toy Story 3 (2010)

The third installment of Toy Story franchise came way after the initial two, but when it came it became the favorite movie of the grown-ups as well as the children. Those who had grown up watching Toy Story still found themselves connected with the character of Buzz Lightyear and Woody. In this movie, Andy is all big now and is leaving for college, so the toys are sent to the daycare center. 5. Shutter Island (2010)

One of the best psychological thrillers to come this weekend, this Scorsese’s flick featuring Di Caprio. Teddy and Chuck, two US Marshals are sent to an asylum in a far-off island for the investigation of the disappearance of a patient. While doing the investigation, Teddy, played by Leonardo Di Caprio finds out insane things about the island and does everything in the attempt to find out the truth about it. The movie will play with your mind and you’ll find yourself not understanding anything at times, but you’ll have to sit through the movie to enjoy every flavor of it.

4. The King’s Speech (2010)

This movie, starring Colin Firth, playing the role of King George VI received the Academy Award for the Best Picture of the year 2010. The plot revolves around King George VI who comes to power but has a very serious problem with speech as he stammers through every single sentence and is unable to utter words on the stage. Since Britain is at war, it was expected of him to lead the people at this grave time by his speech, and for this, he takes help from a speech therapist to get his speaking abilities good enough to serve to the kingdom. The film keeps the pace throughout the movie and you’ll almost feel motivated to an extent after watching this gem of a movie.

3. Black Swan (2010)

Black Swan, directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Natalie Portman playing the role of Nina, a ballet dancer, is a serious film that portrays the struggles of an artist who is known for perfect performances, even in the circumstances when she is not all fit to dance, she still insists on doing it. It’s a movie that is able to beautifully portray the contrast between the good and the bad sides of a human being, as Nina starts to fall into madness at one time. This movie requires some serious viewing to get the exact message that it tries to convey.

2. The Social Network (2010)

“You don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies.” This line perfectly conveys what this Fincher directed flick is all about. The movie is about the journey of Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook through his days at Harvard with all the spats and disputes at the beginning along with all the key things that made Facebook what it is today. The characterization and drama are beautifully projected on the big screen. It is one of the best biographical movies to come out in the modern cinematic world.

1. Inception (2010)

Inception, directed by Christopher Nolan when it first came out, left people wondering when they first came out of the theatre. The movie revolves around the story of Cobb who is a person who is adept at stealing information from other people in their dreams. He is accused of the murder of his wife and has to do one thing for redemption: an inception. The story is very complex to absorb and hard to follow, but once you get the gist of it, you’ll savor it for all time. It is an open-ended take which is open to all types of interpretations.
