Undoubtedly, Joker is one of DC’s most famous and perhaps most enigmatic villains. Unlike most bad guys, Joker does not have a grand plan or evil ambition. Instead, the clown prince of Gotham is more than happy sowing the seeds of chaos. Over time, we have seen some wonderful portrayals of Joker but they have all been in Batman movies; be it Jack Nicholson’s portrayal as the gangster-like Joker, or Heath Ledger’s stunning portrayal of an anarchist madman bent on breaking Batman’s spirit.
Despite the popularity of the Joker, the figure remains shrouded in mystery insofar as no one seems to know Joker’s origin story properly. ‘Joker’ is not a superhero movie, it is an origin story for one of the most popular villains in comics. However, the film does away with the tropes we have come to associate with superheroes and villains. It is actually an exploration of society, a study of how alienation can drive a man insane. We see how Arthur Fleck seeks help at first but does not find any. Moreover, nothing in his life seems to go right, including the fact that he gets beaten up as well. Normally, a man would crack under such pressure. Well, Arthur cracks too, but more violently, since he sees it all as a joke. The movie is inspired by the works of Martin Scorsese, who was attached as a producer before dropping out. It is a serious exploration of the human psyche and social conditions.
