Ben Affleck is in talks to star in the upcoming erotic thriller ‘Deep Water’. The rising star Ana de Armas is also expected to join him in the film that is reportedly based on the 1957 novel by Patricia Highsmith, whose credits include ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley‘. New Regency is financing the movie, which has been adapted by Zack Helm and Sam Levinson, known for ‘Stranger Than Fiction’ and ‘Euphoria’, respectively. If everything falls into place, the deal is expected to go through with Fox/Disney and the filming will start in November.
Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas will play Vic and Melinda Van Allen, a young and attractive couple who find themselves in a loveless marriage, trapped in a small town. Their relationship is held together by the fact that the wife is allowed to take as many lovers as she pleases, as long as she does not desert the family. However, the mind games take a deadly turn when the husband grows jealous of the woman’s infidelities and is afraid she might abandon him, and subsequently, he comes up with a murderous plot in which many of her lovers begin to turn up dead.
The erotic thriller is being directed by Adrian Lyne and is completely in the director’s wheelhouse, whose best works include ‘Unfaithful‘, ‘Fatal Attraction‘, ‘9 1/2 Weeks‘, ‘Flashdance‘, and ‘Indecent Proposal‘. The movie is expected to focus on the surface facade of suburban American life, and the cold reality that lies underneath it.
The movie is being produced by Garrett Basch and Steven Zaillian, along with Guymon Casady and Ben Forkner of Entertainment 360, as well as Anthony Katagas and Arnon Milchan. Lyne had long been interested in the project and had first set it up with Fox 2000 in 2013. However, now, it is likely to be distributed through New Regency’s deal with Fox. This makes ‘Deep Water’ another of New Regency’s potentially plum projects, along with Brad Pitt-starrer ‘Ad Astra‘, and Robert Pattinson-starrer ‘The Lighthouse’.
Notably, Ben Affleck was last seen in Netflix’s ‘Triple Frontier‘ and will be appearing in ‘The Last Thing He Wanted’ and Ridley Scott’s ‘The Last Duel’, along with Matt Damon. Ana de Armas is on a roll as well, and is set to play Marilyn Monroe in Netflix’s movie ‘Blonde’. The Cuban born impressed everyone with with her performance in ‘Blade Runner 2049‘ including the director, Andrew Dominik, who had long been looking for the perfect actress to cast in the role of Marilyn Monroe. ‘Blonde’ will most likely have Adrian Brody playing the role of Arthur Miller, and Bobby Cannavale playing Joe DiMaggio. Ana de Armas is also slated to appear in ‘Knives Out’ and the new Bond movie, ‘James Bond 25‘.
